Russia was part of the Soviet Union from 1922 all the way to 1991. The US and Soviet Union, through most part of the last part of the 20 th century were principal factors in the epic battle that was referred to as the Cold War as they fought for global domination.

The battle was basically a struggle between the capitalist and communist social organization and forms of economy. Though Russia has adopted capitalist and democratic structures, the history of Cold War still colors the relations between the US and Russia.

What is the relation?

US-Russia relation is a bilateral relationship between these two countries and all predecessor states. Relations between the United States and Russia have been tense for the longest time in the past. However, the two countries in recent years have developed a partnership that is beneficial and always growing.

Towards the end of the 1980’s Eastern European nations started breaking from the communist rule due to Soviet control relaxation under the rule of Mikhail Gorbachev. United States president George H. W. Bush and Gorbachev on 31 st June 1991 signed the treaty START I which cut back   on nuclear war heads. The Soviet Union was dissolved in December 1991 and independent Common Wealth states were formed. With the end of communism, the relations between the US and Russia warmed up rapidly.

World War II

Before entering into World War II the US provided weapons worth millions of dollars to the Soviet Union and other countries to support the fight against Nazi Germany. In a bid to liberalize Europe, the two became allies and by the end of the war, countries which were occupied by the Soviet forced (including large areas of Germany) were under the influence of the Soviet. Winston Churchill, British prime minister described it as being under an iron curtain. Because of this division, the Cold War begun and it ran from 1947 to 1991.

The Soviet Union Falls

Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet leader led reforms which lead to Soviet empire dissolution and because of this, independent states were formed. Boris Yeltsin, the first Russian democratically elected president came into power in 1991 and this led to a dramatic change which triggered the overhaul of United States defense and foreign policy.

Formation of new co-operations

With Cold War end, Russia and the United States got a new opportunity to cooperate. The permanent seat at UN Security Council that was held by the Soviet Union was taken over by Russia (full veto power). The council had been in a gridlock because of the Cold War but with the end of Soviet Union Rule, there was a rebirth and The United Nation could take action and the two countries found new ways to cooperate.
